SB 1070 was a catalyst for bringing attention to the failure of the federal government to act on an issue that greatly affects Arizona and I continue to believe that it is absolutely essential that Arizona defend its borders, its citizens, and its economy. That is why in the 2013 budget I supported appropriating $21,370,600 to the Department of Public Safety’s Gang and Immigration Intelligence Enforcement Team (GIITEM) to fight drug and human smuggling, which includes paying for an additional 100 DPS officers assigned to GIITEM.
At the same time, we must recognize that the ground is shifting on the immigration front, and we need, now more than ever, a comprehensive solution and commitment from the federal government on America’s immigration policy.
I am prepared to introduce and support any new legislation if and when it becomes necessary to maintain Arizona’s border security, while working towards creating new ways to grow our economy. Economic issues underline, for better and worse, the relationship between the US and Mexico, and economics will determine Arizona’s future as well.
Arizona’s right to effective law enforcement and promoting Arizona’s economy, is not a contradiction. Both are critical to shaping the best possible tomorrow for Arizona.
